Heat smart to keep winter bills from boiling over EnergyAustralia urges households to think smart when deciding the best heating options for the home, and not to buy the first heater they see.
According to EnergyAustralia’s energy efficiency expert Paul Myors if you are buying a new heater take some time to consider your options to keep your bill from boiling over.
“When it comes to heating the first rule is, don’t overheat your home. For every degree you heat above 21 degrees Celsius you’re adding about 10 per cent to your heating costs,” Mr Myors said.
“If you’ve got a large area to heat, gas heaters and reverse cycle air conditioners can be expensive purchases but they provide more heat at a lower running cost.
“It’s important to get expert advice to find the right size for your home and check out the star rating labels, the more stars the more energy efficient the appliance is.
“Portable electric heaters are cheap to buy but expensive to run. In fact, leaving a portable electric heater running for four hours every evening over winter can cost you up to $100 and will generate up to 750 kg of CO2 emissions.
“Radiant heaters are a good option for heating one person rather than a whole room. Fan and convection heaters can also be effective for heating a small room.
“Oil column heaters are slow to heat but are safe to run unattended making them a good option if you have children,” Mr Myors said.
Regardless of the type of heater you choose, it’s important to use it efficiently by taking some simple steps.
“Zone your home by shutting doors and only heat the area you are in, set thermostats between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius and make sure you switch the heater off when it’s not needed,” Mr Myors said.
By making these simple changes when using your heater, you’ll avoid the winter chill and keep your winter bill down. |
